Idaho Statewide AI Alliance Statement of Shared Principles

The Idaho Statewide AI Alliance created a statement of shared principles in January 2024 to communicate and emphasize shared principles of student learning and ethics when using generative AI in the academy. The shared principles focus on human judgment, empathy, and ethical discernment when harnessing generative AI for the benefit of education. While the principles are not hard and fast rules, it is a good idea to review them and keep them in mind as you use generative AI in your teaching and learning. The Generative AI in Higher Education Shared Principles Statement provides additional depth on the following principles:

  1. People come first.
  2. An inquiry mindset will foster a culture of continuous learning about AI.
  3. Learners need equitable access to generative AI.
  4. Responsive, engaged teaching matters more than ever.
  5. Expectations around privacy and copyright are evolving rapidly.
  6. Transparency is essential.

In creating this statement, the members of the Alliance used a statement published by the United Nations Internet Governance Forum, “”Higher Education’s Essential Role in Preparing Humanity for the Artificial Intelligence Revolution.” The members of the Alliance recognize that this is a rapidly developing situation and consider their statement to be a living document that will likely be modified in the future as events warrant.
